INTRODUCTION

A capacitor after winding, heat stabilizing and end spraying often be a short circuit. Clearing is achieved by applying a voltage across the capacitor so that sufficient current can flow to clear the short without allowing too much to flow and so damage the end connection.

CLEARING METHODS

Two clearing steps are necessary to achieve satisfactory clearing.
1. HIGH SPEED PULSE CLEARING
  Initial clearing, to remove low resistance shorts requires a high instantaneous current. This can be
  achieved by an AC voltage of say 30~50 voltage, with a current availability of 1~2amps. Alternatively
  a low impedance capacitor of say 200 microfarads charged up to 30~60 DC voltages can be discharged
  directly across the capacitor to be cleared.
2. HIGH VOLTAGE CLEARING
  After eliminating any low resistance shorts, by step 1 above, the removal of potential shorts, such as at
  the cut ends of the films at the beginning and end of the winding is a achieved by using a high DC voltage
  supply which must be current limited to say below 10mA to avoid damage to the end connections.
